Happy Winter and Summer solstice. As we say fairwell to 2023 this writer is holding on to a year filled with fantastic memories (mostly). Look we've made it THIS far, we deserve a break, unfortunately Santa does not go around houses with no cookies, so guess who is suddenly the baker, the toymaker, etc. The only thing this writer is grateful for right now is that this frenzy only happens once a year. That and the fact that everyone else is on holiday somewhere else, so expect belated X-mas cards. Like Santa, I've got a list, so for the next few months, you might see YOUR name hidden in the stories. A list of a different kind. Paying it forward, my way 🤶🏻❄️

X-mas

~ At least this one does NOT belong to Elon Musk, 😝

Please don't light the chimney. Santa can't fit, and no eggnog, tiny glasses of sherry will suffice. Also, make sure that all biscuits are wrapped, and ingredients listed. I love you guys, but another dope cookie? NO. I'd like to be able to enjoy the New Year.

Before I start spreading joy and happiness. I have questions:

Ten questions; two minutes.

1. What ancient civilization celebrated the winter solstice with a festival known as Saturnalia, during which social norms were temporarily overturned, and gift-giving and feasting were common?

2. In medieval Europe, how did people mark the winter solstice before the widespread adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, which shifted the date?

3. In Nordic traditions, the winter solstice is celebrated with the festival Yule. What symbol, often associated with Yule, represents the return of the sun during the darkest days of winter?

4. During the Victorian era, Christmas traditions underwent a revival, including the popularization of Christmas cards. Who is credited with designing the first commercial Christmas card in 1843?

5. In what country did the custom of putting up a Christmas tree originate, and what did people traditionally use to decorate it before the introduction of ornaments?

6. In the 17th century, the Puritans in England and America disapproved of Christmas celebrations, considering them too festive. What leader famously banned Christmas festivities in England in 1647?

7. What Christmas tradition is said to have originated with the 18th-century American colonists, who adapted the custom from their European ancestors?

8. In Greek tradition, a figure called the "kallikantzaroi" is believed to emerge during the Twelve Days of Christmas to cause mischief. What do people do to ward off these mischievous creatures?

9. In what year did Charles Dickens publish "A Christmas Carol," a novella that played a significant role in popularizing many aspects of the modern Christmas celebration?

10. In which country does the tradition of celebrating St. Nicholas' Day on December 6th involve leaving shoes or stockings out overnight to be filled with small gifts and treats?

* Some of the above answers MAY BE WRONG. It's the holidays, so whenever you have time, contact this writer - to me a Yule log is a French dessert, Kallikantzaroi sounds like bad news and though number ten may be factually correct - who in 2023 (except for my friends in the Netherlands) put out shoes from the 6th? Well done you! If I ever leave my shoes outside, they'll be stolen and put under someone else's tree.

By the way, Charles Dickens…I suspect you're in trouble. An enjoyable read, but you and the brothers Grimm made the Naughty list.

Socks, all of you ¯\(°_o)/¯
