Dealing Shadows

Balancing the scales

~ When Red's vengeance restores the balance, and Shadows breaks free.

Author's note: As a writer, it is hard to say goodbye to the villains one creates. The story however, takes priority.

Time to let the characters play…

Dealing shadows

In the fight for survival, all bets are off. Sacrifices are avenged.

These are the deals we make in the shadows.

Chapter One

Part one:

"No!" Milk struggles for a moment in Cinder's embrace. "You promised!" she pleads, her tone accusatory, eyes blazing. Ever since Cinder's had found Milk, the weight of this promise has hung heavy on her heart.

"Look, calm down" Cinder's hisses into her ear. "You agreed to help us, but on your terms. You should have known that going up against Red was the gravest mistake you could ever have made."

"You co-operate, there might be a future. One in which you see your son grow."

Part two:

As Cinder's tries to deal with the rising hysteria, she notices Vander bent over the warlock. Glancing at the ground she soon realizes why.

"Vander, what have you done? Please tell me that he's still alive."

"Oh, he's alive princess, he might not be conscious, but at least he IS silent." There's something in his unnatural eyes, a seething anger that warns Cinder's to not enquire any further.

"Please tell me you weren't torturing him" she sighs.

Vander bristles at this thought but, he doesn't respond. He's starting to resent all the questions and what they imply.

Just then, Red arrives. Exhaustion etched on her features. "We must hurry. Shadows' light is fading."

Vander and Cinder's start to talk at the same time.

"Stop" Red sends this command telepathically. A warning so severe that it seems as time itself obeys.

"You both had your duties. Simple instructions that, if not for your stubbornness, should have been easy enough to follow."

Part three:

Red leans over the warlock, her eyes narrowing as she studies his unconscious form.

"I wonder," she murmurs, her voice a deadly whisper, "what secrets you’re so eager to carry with you into the eternal darkness, you soulless wreck."

Just then, the warlock stirs, a sneer twisting across his battered face. He lets out a harsh, barking laugh.

"You think I did all this on my own?" His voice drips with contempt. "You have no idea how deep the trouble goes, do you?"

Red’s patience snaps, her weariness vanishing in a flash of cold fury. With a single, swift motion, she grabs his throat, lifting him effortlessly.

"Why don’t you enlighten me?" she hisses, her grip tightening. "Or should I guess? One more word, and I’ll mail your forked tongue back to the Covenant."

She lets out a bitter laugh, more an exhausted sigh than anything. "Unlike you, my dear mortal rival, I never needed to sell my soul." Her voice softens, but the menace remains. "The council may frown upon my actions, but you forget one thing." She leans in, her eyes cold as winter. "I am the council."

Red releases her grip just enough for the warlock to breathe. "Now, you will release my daughter. And you will be punished."

A flicker of sadness crosses her face, unexpected but undeniable. Memories stir—her old life, when death was always the last resort, only used when all other options had failed.

Death was easy, she thought, almost wistfully. Living was much harder.

She turns her back to the warlock, her voice dropping to a low murmur.

"Focus on Shadows' life..."

It was a well-executed attack, she had to admit that much. But once this was over, she would hunt down whoever was responsible. They would pay, and she would make sure of it. Her mind was already calculating, planning the next steps. She knows that after this, she'll need to find out who she had offended, and offend them right back.

The consequences of the next few hours, were going to leave irrevocable scars, not just in her mind, but across the whole world. She had failed in many ways. She wouldn't fail Shadows.

Chapter Two

Introduction

Shadows' wrath

Shadows, feeling a flicker of newfound hope, makes the choice to save herself.

With the psychic barrier shattered, Red and Cinder's thoughts rush in, filling the fractured spaces of her soul with the primal will to survive. Their words blend with her longing to truly live -to explore the world, to see, touch, and taste the places she had never dared dream of. A vision of an unshaped future stirs within her.

Carefully, she reaches into the now familiar void. Her fingers brush against a silk cord, a precious gift from the Spider. Twisting it around her fist, she feels the weight of his sacrifice.

"Don't die on me yet," she whispers, a vow uttered beneath her breath -both to him and to herself.

Disgust coils in her gut. The realization that she was manipulated, used as a pawn with devastating consequences, sickens her. But it fuels her too. Rage ignites within, setting her veins ablaze - anger at herself, at the world, and at the absurdity of the situation. That fury numbs the pain, the hunger, the cold.

"I will rain vengeance!" she screams into the abyss still trying to consume her, still trying to pull her down.

Her emotions surge. Love and hate battling within her, crashing like waves over the anger she clings to like a lifeline.

"I will rise from this place."

With deadly focus, she begins to climb, slow and deliberate, but unstoppable.
