Trapped indecision

Foreword:

This is part three of a short series, which will eventually be published in "Fight off Sorrows" - no, that's no grammar mistake, but it gives you the reader an indication of my protagonists' attitude.

A quick summary of how we got to this part: Cinders, the young princess was taken under the wings of Red - an immortal warrior and sometimes "Goddess of War", they accidentally met in the woods. While Red travels through portals in time and space, Cinders is learning how to regain her birthright, as she is the true heir to the throne. We continue with Cinders meeting Red's daughter, one member of a team of vigilantes with some peculiar abilities of their own…

Shadow shreds

I.

As Redshadow leaves her father speechless, she makes her way into the forest, Calling out to Vander, her werewolf companion. With silent steps, he saunters up to her. "Don't do that! You'll scare the life out of me" she scolds him.

He looks closely at her face, a question in his eyes. "I cannot deceive him like this. He's no fool and we are here to help, remember?"

"Shadow, we are helping. The lies won't matter in the end." She shoots him a look and shrugs, "perhaps you are right, but it still tears me up inside."

Vander, knowing when to keep quiet, lifts up his efforts. Two rabbits and some fish, skillfully strung together. "Remind me why wolves don't fish?" he asks her, with a mischievous grin.

"Oh c'mon, there's no way you are still afraid of the bears?" She is laughing now, but Vander does not share her merriment. "Easy for you to say, give me any creature but a bear. They're smart and very territorial, you remember that circus bear we rescued? He might have followed you around like a house pet, but my shoulder still hurts in the cold. And Shadows, the waters here are only now melting."

She beams at him, "Stop sulking, there's no way you ran into a bear here. Maybe a big boar…and we both know you can deal with them." He shakes himself, demonic boars, in my wolf form. There IS a difference."

"Besides, I'm sure that one was a cousin of cousin, so don't remind me."

II.

"Actually no, you are right. There is something 'off' here. While hunting I could feel a presence, a darkness that we've never encountered. Stalking me, for lack of a better word." He says it with such earnest conviction that Shadow does not question his instincts.

"Oh shoot!" she exclaims. "Did you see Cinders anywhere?"

"Down by the small stream, sleeping like a queen."

"Just sleeping?" Trying to keep the worry out of her voice, "Let's go find my new BFF, shall we?"

Redshadow/ Shadow feels a twist in her gut. She turns to her second in command. "Vander, I know this is not really your concern, but… please…"

Vander immediately shifts into his wolf form, yelping as his limbs begin to transform. Wincing as his face twists and his teeth elongate. "I'm on it, try to keep up." The wolf starts to run, Shadow close on his heels.

As they enter the ravine they almost collide with Cinders. "Hey! Watch it, I'm walking here."

III.

"No, you're not." Shadow pulls out her sword, as Vander lets out a menacing growl, lips curled back in distaste.

Cinders sighs; "Not this again?"

"Nice try" Shadow rolls on to her toes, ready to strike. "Where is she? What have you done to her?" Breathing through her nostrils, she recoils from the stench of old age mixed the smell of even older blood. "Speak now demon or I shall show you no mercy. None."

This creature of shadows. This abomination against all things good and pure, starts to giggle. He practically hisses a taunt. "Your mother might scare me, but you girl, do not." And before either of his two adversaries can react. he dissolves into shadows. Tarry shadows clinging to the normal shadows cast by the forest.

"Yuck! I've never liked his type" Shadows shudders.

"Find Cinders. Now Vander, I feel she's in grave danger. More than I ever imagined." The wolf obeys reluctantly, casting a backwards glance at the woman he loves. Unwilling to leave her side.

"I will be fine."

IV.

Not long after their encounter and after a fruitless search, both return to the base camp. Tired and frustrated.

"What happened to the two of you?" A concerned Cinders, surrounded by her small army asks them. "I thought you had left, but as you can see, I managed to organize a search party. Just in case."

"Stand down guys, crisis averted."

A perplexed Shadows wonders if this is the ideal time and place to confront her. She's running on fumes herself. She also knows full well that a battle of wills is the last thing these faithful guards need to witness.

Then she catches the eye of one, a handsome man with concern written all over him. She wonders if this was Cinders' usual behavior. Something about the flatness of her eyes and the imperious tone of voice seems at odds with everything she had been told.

"He got to her and we were too late." She admonishes herself.

Again, the same guard stares hard at her, this time she sees the silent plea. Then as if nothing happened, he strolls up to Cinders. "Princess" he says in a deep baritone, "you seem to have hurt your hand?"

That's when Shadow sees it, a spreading darkness, not quite a bruise, creeping up from the gloved hand. Conveniently hiding… what, exactly?

"Oh don't fuss, sergeant. It's nothing, merely a sprain. I stumbled near the water's edge. Nothing to worry about."

Just then the Spider drops onto Shadows shoulder. "She's lying and she's worse at it than you, my dear." With that parting shot he slips into her pocket. "Take me to her" he commands. Shadows hears his voice in her head. "Take me to her, but do not raise her suspicion."

Shadows grinds her jaw. "No! Out! I have my wolf, use him. She would not dare hurt an animal here, surrounded by her own people."

And so it happened, that the wolf and the spider made a pact. "Ok, old man, let's see what happens next." With an exaggerated whimper, he limps towards Cinders.

"You poor thing!" she exclaims. "What happened?" Her eyes shooting triumphant daggers at Redshadow. Vander, meanwhile, feeling like a dog, lifts his massive paw pathetically. "I do not see any… before she can finish the sentence, the Spider's venom begins it's healing duty.

Shocked, Cinders sways. Knowing exactly what just happened. For a brief second, it's as if she seems to realize, that despite everything, she's been fooled twice today. Her eyes already closing, she smiles at the Spider. "Saving me again?"

Her heart starts to hammer erratically, her limbs spasming. Shadows runs to her side. Gently holding her down. With a vice like grip they clench hands. "It's not your fault C. I'm sorry, for everything. For not warning you."

"Red's going to be livid" she thinks to herself. "Can you use the 'live ink' now?" She implores her stepfather. "On her?"

"I must. See this stain spreading? Once this shadow penetrates deep enough, we will never get her back."

"Time, as always, is of the utmost importance. Bring me everything you have. And find that parcel!"

"The trapped one will strike soon, I fear. If he had the parcel, he would have done so already."

V.

Vander interrupts him. "He does not, and we were not sent here to fight dying demons. Besides, while you were all fussing and fretting, I got a communication from our team." He looks apologetically at Shadows. "Our young witch is on her way. She says to put Cinders in/on ice. She has the parcel. Before her message got cut off by all the drama, she had one message to you, Shadows: you need a sword made from sunlight. How, I'm not yet sure."

"Think about it, he somehow absorbed the food I hunted, if he still needs to eat, he can't be all dead."

Shadows thinks about this. Could it be? Was that rancid thing simply a cleverly cloaked warlock? As she starts to gather her wits, the answer seems more and more obvious. Clever, she thinks. A spy to stop a revolution, disguised as something far more menacing. Then suddenly, a chilling thought: a warlock smart enough to defeat something that old? She suddenly realizes why she smelt young and ancient blood when she was ready to fight him.

So, a clever warlock not sure in his abilities? Otherwise, why run?

"Vander, remind me what we do with cowards again?" She asks sweetly. Vander, noticing the change in her mood, holds up two fingers."

"Well, we used to throw them in the pit, but since the pit is in another dimension, I think this one's a bit out of luck. At least he will be when you find him."

"Maybe, but we're in the kingdom of miracles now. We shall see."
