A battle of wills
A battle of wills
A battle of wills
A daughter's duty
A daughter's duty
A daughter's duty
A battle of wills.
~ Redshadow's discontent lingers.
Cinders, momentarily distracted by the parcel from Red and feeling a new unease settle over her, looks up. She had sensed what felt like a hiccup in time, a small but undeniable shift in air.
She looks up, and sees this unknown woman standing alone in front of her.
"Wait a second? What happened to Vander?" she whispers, her throat parched, as if she had been walking through flames.
"Oh, the usual, he is resting with me. Or residing within me" Redshadow murmurs, her voice, soothing. "Best not to wake him, and I was in sore need of some fresh clothes."
Now, at this point Cinders, still not convinced whether this stranger was yet another test is getting increasingly annoyed. The voice in her head screaming obscenities and warnings like 'Run, you fool!'
"Oh dear, such language from a supposed lady" Redshadow enunciates each vowel like a headmistress from a private school.
"Not you too!" Cinders bellows these words, without uttering a sound.
Before she can utter another word, Redshadow drives her to the ground, carving a silencing rune on the dirt underneath their feet.
"Look princess, I did not come all this way for you to announce my arrival to this realm. Now, silence those thoughts and take me to my father. I'll release your mind, and maybe Red's parcel will remind of just how much you need to learn and master again."
A daughter's duty.
"Your father?" Cinders, feeling more hostile than before, whispers.
"Yes, you know. Walks on eight legs, has trouble communicating…wait, never mind, I can see him from here. See what I said about cloaking those thoughts?"
Cinders stands dead-still, tears welling up in her eyes. The betrayal washes over her face.
"I…I.. thought you had left me! Like … well, like 'they' all do!
Redshadow glances a question at her father. This is one thing she had not been expecting.
"Shush child, I've never let you out of my sight" he pleads with the young woman, attempting to stem the flow of tears. "I watch you while you sleep, and when you do not.
"Be warned, you've dealt with the warlock. His true name is "The trapped one" , I know you think you are ready to take him on by yourself. You are not."
"And yes, this is my daughter, returned to me, for what reason I know not."
As a flush creeps up both the young women's faces, he sighs. "Introduce yourselves immediately! I might not have been much of a father, but this is beyond rude. The insolence!'
With that said, he once again takes up his self-inflicted post, keeping watch over the small but precious community.

I leave you with a quote by Alex Elle today:
"Sometimes we have to stop being scared and just go for it. Either it will work or it won't. That is life."
🪝Keep on reading, the story is only the beginning. Take a chance and roll the dice.
